“Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14” according to Wikipedia.
It is a celebration of love and affection.
The date of February 14 was originally chosen by the Western Christian Church.
July 6 was the date chosen by the Eastern Orthodox Church.
It is possible that the ancient Romans may also be somewhat responsible for the naming this modern day of love.
Emperor Claudius II executed two men named Valentine on the date of February 14 on various years in the third century A.D.
It is possible that the Catholic Church named them as martyrs and celebrated them on St Valentine’s Day.
There is also a feast known as the feast of Lupercalia. It was a spring festival celebrated by the ancient Romans.
This feast occurred on February 15.
It is thought that with the onset of Christianity that the date was changed to the 14th to coincide with the saint day that celebrated the “Valentine”-named martyrs.
Some say a pagan fertility ritual was held in February each year. Eventually the Pope abolished this festival and proclaimed February 14 Saint Valentine’s Day.
It became a feast day included on the Catholic Calendar of Saints.
The poet Chaucer in England during the Middle Ages was the first to link St Valentine with romantic love.
Today, many people give presents to their loved ones.
Flowers, chocolates, jewelry are very common choices.
Some people dress up and go out for a romantic dinner.
Various cities around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day in their own unique ways.
Valentine’s Day is relatively new in Denmark – it has only been celebrated since the early 1990’s.
Rather than roses, friends and sweethearts exchange pressed white flowers called snowdrops.
They also exchange “lover’s cards”.
Men also give women gaekkebrev, a joking letter consisting of a funny poem or rhyme written on intricately cut paper and signed only with anonymous dots. If she guesses the sender she receives an Easter Egg later in the year.
In North America it is common for romantically involved couples to become engaged to be married.

My favourite personal Valentine’s Day memory comes from way-back-when in 1968.
I remember it as if it were yesterday.
It was Grade 2 in elementary school.
Our teacher had us create Valentine’s Day Mail Envelopes that we taped to the chalk board shelf all around our school classroom one week before Valentine’s Day.
The idea was to bring and “mail” our ready-made Valentine’s Day Cards and deliver or “post” them into our friends’ and crushes’ mail box envelopes.
You could see the popular boys’ and girls’ envelopes beginning to bulge by February 13th.
On February 14, we were allowed to open our envelopes at the end of the day.
I was a mid-range popular gal in the class – I received many cards from my female classmates.
And I received only one from a male classmate.
But “Oh what a Valentine’s Day Card Sentiment”.
After 49 years I remember the wording word-for-word and I still carry a warm spot for that fellow in my heart after 49 years.
The card was a picture of 2 peas in a pod and the wording was:
“Peas Be My Podner”
My heart melted into a thousand pieces that day.
We were later chosen in Grade 7 at age 13 to play Jesus and Mary in the School Christmas play.
Aaaaaaah, old-fashioned romance!
Happy Valentine’s Day dear reader!
